I figured I would start my new blog with this, a rant. Maybe we're calling them think pieces now, I don't know, but I've been keeping this rant deep in my soul for months now. I think I'll begin with... Fuck Bella Hadid. Not really, I'm sure she's an amazing human and she's obviously beautiful but we've all seen that Complex interview by now. Yeah, you know the one. Well, I watched it and cringed the whole time. It's not her fault, she doesn't know any better. It's somehow the cultures fault for selling out to shiny things, money, and the Kylie Jenners of the world...
I don't know how to say this without sounding like a "I heard that band first"-type of teenager but, if you've followed me for a while now you know I've been collecting sneakers since I was about 13. And not "omg I love Nike's"-sneaker collecting. Like, going to Sneakercon, SoledOut, Soho Meetups, Sneakerplay, ISS, FSF, sneaker collecting. I have storage units dedicated to this shit. It's really more than that though, it means a lot to me. I've met so many amazing people through this and I've learned so much. Where has it brought me now though? Being forced to converse with people who bought a pair of silverbullets and listen to how much they love sneakers. I don't know why it bothers me so much that everyone claims to be a sneakerhead now. I guess because the word has lost it's meaning. No one takes it seriously anymore. People are getting hired to be the head of streetwear brands and in their grail pictures they're posing by a bunch of GR Nike's that came out within the past 2 years. It just boils my blood. What happened to the sneaker community, and when did it become so easy to enter? I mean Bella Hadid literally said she "basketball shoes are cool but.." and then picked up a pair of fucking Uptempo's! Like they're basketball shoes girl. I'll try to keep calm but, seriously, who let this go on. It's not so much that there are so many people claiming to be a sneakerhead now, it's just the blatant lack of knowledge. I would never claim to know what I don't know. I like make-up, but I'm not a big beauty blogger because I don't know a whole lot other than how to slather it on my face and look cute.
It's almost Nike's fault, over saturating the market. I feel like they got sick of the reselling shit, and we're like "fuck it lets just release all the shit these kids are literally searching the world for". I remember I found a seller on EBay once who would sell wholesale shit bulk he found in garage sales and he had a few random sneakers. So I asked if he knew any sneakers he had, he wasn't really keen on it so I asked if I could go look at it. He had a loft in SoHo, I took my neighbor with me because I'm not dumb. But anyways, that's how I bought two pairs of OG Shadow 10's for 100$. In the OG Jordan box, the one where the box top lifts up and shit. That's the shit we did for sneakers. Now you can just wait a few months and Nike's going to produce some B-grade quality Bred 1's. I also don't know if this is good or bad because my sneakers aren't cracking but it's just not the same. I still love sneakers, but I'm tired of wearing heat and newbies thinking they're fake or something because they're so deeply uninformed.
I'm sure I'll rant about this again, because I'm tired. The moral of my story is, you can sit with us if you do your research.
